As we reach the end of the school year, we would like to thank our wonderful journalists, photographers, and editors for their hard work, time, and intentionality as they contributed to The Heartbeat. We are thrilled to have successfully produced and distributed nine publications throughout the 2024-2025 school year — all of which fantastically represented our team’s diligence, creativity, and successful collaboration — and we are grateful for the SHP community’s continued support for the efforts of their student journalists.
Additionally, we would like to specifically honor the following journalists and artists who received nominations and awards from the Journalism Education Association for their contributions to The Heartbeat community: Selena Jiang ‘25 was nominated for “Design of the Year: Front Page” and “Portfolio of the Year: Artist of the Year”; Grace Rocha ‘25 received eighth place for “Feature Reporting” for her article “Kyle Maslin’s Achievements in Rodeo World”; Addy Davis ‘26 and Jaiden Ghuman ‘26 won “Best of Show” for their reporting for their article “Administration Enacts New Spirit Week Policy”; and AJ O’Donnell ‘27 received seventh place for “DEI Reporting” for her article “In the Spirit of Artists.”
In the next school year, we are looking to continue building on the incredible accomplishments of our current team. We are additionally hoping to expand the reach and appeal of The Heartbeat — committing to publishing our work online and improving our presence at on-campus events. We hope to find new mediums of communication and publication, working with SHPTV and KSHS Radio to accompany our articles with podcasts, short films, etc.
We are proud to announce that, next year, The Heartbeat publication will be spearheaded by a new team of dedicated leaders, collaborators, and journalists. Next fall, we look forward to seeing The Heartbeat continue to grow under the leadership of our new Editors-in-Chief, Brooke Soderbery ‘26, Duke Tom ‘26, Livia Valentine ‘26, and Rocco Vitale — in conjunction with our new Visual Lead, Liyang Zhuang ‘27.
