While walking the halls, you may have noticed the SHPTV videos on the screens of various SHP sports teams, but now, for the first time, they will be creating a full documentary to expand their sports coverage. This documentary intends to bring attention to a less attended sport: girl’s water polo. Thomas Klemens ‘26, one of the SHPTV leaders and the producer of the documentary, explained that “girl’s water polo doesn’t get a whole lot of media coverage, so we thought it would be good to start out trying to show aspects of sports that people don’t really know.” Despite being one of the most successful teams — the 2023 champions of CCS open division, WCAL, and Norcal Invitational — they have a low attendance rate at their games. Casey Coleman ‘26, a member of both the girl’s water polo team and SHPTV, shared that she hopes the documentary will “bring some recognition to [her] sport and how hard everyone works,” and she hopes that the documentary will inspire more girls to join the sport.
Klemens hopes to imitate the style of typical documentary conversations. He explained that he wants to ensure the documentary has “personal stories and elements.” However, this has proven difficult because “the best moments come from being around the team 24/7,” and he can’t be at every practice. Ultimately, Klemens and his team have decided to do individual interviews with members of the team to better understand their dynamics and get a deeper look into them.
The girl’s water polo postseason could last until late November, and depending on the duration of the season, the documentary could be as long as 30 minutes. SHPTV aims to complete the documentary as a first semester project, and have it released sometime in December. The team is very excited to share their sport with the community and watch the documentary.
