Over winter break, Girls Varsity Soccer took an exciting trip to Orange County, marking a significant step in their preparation for the upcoming season. This trip not only provided an opportunity to compete but also served as an important bonding experience.
During their time in Southern California, the team engaged in a variety of activities designed to strengthen their camaraderie and teamwork. From intense matches against fierce, competitive schools like Mater Dei and JSerra to relaxing group outings at Newport Beach, the trip provided players with both excellent training and leisure time. The Gators had the chance to build trust and deepen their friendships, which will undoubtedly improve their performance on the field. Head Coach Armando Rio noted that “traveling together on a plane and rooming in hotels as a team is one of the most underrated team experiences” — speaking to the power of traveling as a group to strengthen friendships on the team.
Coach Jake Moffat additionally shared his love for the trip, highlighting its importance for the team: “Of course, the best part of the soccer trip to Orange County was the time in the van with Bella G on aux. The beginning of the high school soccer season always suffers from a series of stops and starts, with interruptions from club soccer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. As a result, the trip serves as an opportunity for the team to come together and really launch into the crucial part of the season.” One of the most memorable moments was a team dinner hosted by senior Lauren Basset’s family. As Coach Moffat described, “the team enjoyed a stunning sunset on the beach, followed by a wonderful, relaxed meal. [and] the evening was filled with laughter.”
This story holds significant meaning for the SHP community, as it highlights the school’s dedication to nurturing not only athletic excellence but also personal development and a strong sense of team spirit. The trip to Orange County exhibits the school’s dedication to providing positive experiences that contribute to the development of student-athletes.
For any student considering joining a school sport, let this story be a reminder of the incredible opportunities and lifelong memories that being part of a team can offer. The Girls Varsity Soccer team’s trip is a prime example of how sports can bring people together and create lasting friendships. These experiences don’t just prepare athletes for athletic success but also for life!
