Do you know the phrase “not for the faintest of hearts”? Well, I am the faintest of hearts. I cannot even watch a trailer for a horror movie without having nightmares for the following week. So, writing a story all about ghosts was probably not the best idea for a scaredy cat like myself. But in the spirit of Halloween, why not tell some good old ghost stories?
This school has a rich history spanning more than 125 years, so there are bound to be some fascinating tales to spin. But which ones are pranks of students trying to spook their friends and which ones do people genuinely believe? There are many different rumors, so who do you go to to find the truth behind hearsay? The first place I went was to my own father, Mr. Rod Cardamone, who worked at the school for 25 years. What follows is a recollection of the stories he has told me since I was young.
Once upon a time, not too long ago, at a place called Sacred Heart Schools, Atherton, two students from the class of 2012 decided it was time to shed light on all the hidden ghost stories. They interviewed teachers and made up a trailer, presenting it to the other students during a school assembly. Many of the students did not know how to feel about the stories being told; the trailer was scary enough. The two students were granted permission to try and see the ghost for themselves and were given permission to spend the night in the basement of the main building. However, something spooked them and they left before the night was over. According to my father, they refused to talk about what had happened in the basement and stopped making the documentary. We will never know what truly happened, but one thing’s for sure — something that night had terrified them to the point of no return.
This is not the only spooky story to be told. Many people have experienced these strange events themselves. A woman who once worked on the third floor of the main building has an interesting story to tell. Every morning when she came into her office, her belongings had been thrown all over the room. Eventually, she had to complain to the night shift and ask them why each morning the items in her office had been scattered all over the place. The people who worked the night shift denied moving her things and explained that it had been a ghost
There is another rumor of some kind of spirit, one that resides in Main Building 331, the classroom of social sciences teachers Kristen Kelly and Serene Williams. During the cold winter weather, the spirit of a young girl who died long ago is said to communicate by banging on the old furnaces.
Your belongings being moved and strange noises are something, but is it enough to prove paranormal activity? If you’re not yet convinced, this next story might do the trick. According to my father, a long-time employee and a friend of his has seen a ghost himself. One night while working late, he got up and left the room to go to the bathroom. When he returned, the room was different. All the lights had been turned off, and someone was sitting at his desk. Dressed in an old nun’s habit sat an old woman — a woman that was long dead.
This school is full of scary stories, from ghosts making strange noises to turning off lights and terrifying teachers in the main building. I have always been obsessed with ghosts and scary stories, even if I have too faint of a heart to take it. Whether you like chilling stories, stay far away from them, or even if you think they’re silly, I hope you enjoy the spooky season!
