It’s officially Fall! Which means the return of pumpkin spice, fall leaves, and most importantly, Gilmore Girls.
Gilmore Girls is the ultimate fall show, and as soon as a single green leaf slightly turns yellow, it is turned on for a rewatch. Although the show takes place in every season, autumn and Gilmore Girls have become interchangeable. From the cozy streets of Stars Hollow to the iconic coffee runs, Gilmore captures the feeling of fall more than any other show.
Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of the show, got the idea for the setting one October after visiting a small town in Connecticut. In ode to this, the first episode opens with a birds-eye view of Stars Hollow during fall. With red and orange trees filling the frame, a cozy New England fall beckons viewers. “The clothes worn in the show also contribute to the fall vibes,” says Siena Sequeira ‘28, and she isn’t wrong. The characters of the show are always dressed for the crisp weather, with Rory Gilmore often wearing the classic combo of a warm cable knit sweater and worn denim.
It’s not just the visuals that contribute to this feeling; the background music also uplifts it. “With the soft “la-la-la” background vocals, each episode feels like a slow weekend in the fall,” Junior, Marie Djacga says, “I love adding songs from Gilmore Girls to my fall playlist.” The opening theme song, “Where You Lead,” by Carole King, is the perfect nostalgic hit, as it encapsulates the warmth to be expected before each episode.
Gilmore Girls also captures the theme of change. As the season shifts, so do the characters’ lives. Rory is starting a new school, and her relationships with family are evolving. The show mirrors what fall can feel like to many SHP students: the air getting colder, leaves changing colors, and a new school year with new challenges. However, Gilmore Girls reminds us that these changes can be warm and filled with lots of beauty.
