As a captain how have you kept the team focused and motivated to have a good season?

Responses
1) I enjoy basketball so much that the process of putting in work and getting better is fun. I play pretty much everyday and just enjoy it so much that it doesn’t feel like work at all. I’ve worked extremely hard leading up to this year and seeing those results pay off in games is so rewarding.
2) As a point guard you have to have a higher IQ than anyone else on the team to help other guys out in spots where they might be a little lost. I love every guy on the team and the first step to playing well together on the court is being friends off the court. I feel extremely connected with the team, and even if there are times where I have to yell at guys or get frustrated they know that it’s only to help them.
3) Our goals are simple. Open Division CCS title and a State Title. We hold ourselves to such high standards because we know that we are capable of doing great things.
4) A lot of motivation is contagious. It comes with just a bunch of energy that carries over to the entire team. I (along with JP and TJ) try to keep everyone engaged in the game even if they are on the bench by just being positive and trying to spread energy to everyone on the team.

Amidst the highly entertaining Boys basketball season, the Gators’ Boys Varsity Basketball team has had great success, following in the footsteps of previous seasons. The team is currently 16-4 overall and more importantly, 6-0 in league. Drew Wagner (‘24), a senior captain and three-year varsity player, has played a significant role in the team’s winning record. Wagner emphasized that loving the game of basketball is imperative to his growth and success on the court. He stated, “I enjoy basketball so much that putting in work and getting better is fun.” He says he plays every day and enjoys it so much that he doesn’t view it as “work,” but rather as a privilege. Wagner has embodied the role of a point guard and a facilitator for most of his basketball career allowing him to understand the importance of a high basketball IQ on the court. Wagner is also dedicated to creating a strong bond with his teammates on and off the court, vocalizing that he “loves every guy on the team and the first step to playing at a high level on the court, is to be friends off the court.” He acknowledges the value of creating off-court relationships with teammates as they translate to chemistry in games. Finally, Wagner notes that his and the team’s goals are simple: win the league, an Open Division CCS title, and ultimately a state title. Wagner says “We hold ourselves to such high standards because we know that we can do great things.” The Gators are off to a great start and hope to build momentum entering the CCS playoffs.
