Singin’ in the Rain required me to make creative decisions about how to visually represent a scene from the beloved movie of the same name. I asked myself, How can colors and shapes best characterize the music? How can I use space to reflect the scene’s choreography? The vertical space represents musical octaves, and the abstract markings track the progression of the melody and instrumental notes. Out of my love for the movie and its music, I wanted to capture the magic I felt when I first saw the scene. The visual score features a bright, blue, rainy scene that is illuminated with glimmers of rainbow and sunshine. And it echoes the movie’s scene where Don Lockwood springs into his iconic musical number, splashing and tap dancing amidst the rain.
