As spring is approaching, sequins and disco beats are filling the air at Sacred Heart. This year, the drama department is transporting us straight to the sunny Greek islands with their upcoming production of Mamma Mia! This cult-favorite 2008 musical film, based on the 1999 stage show, tells the story of a bride-to-be named Sophie, who invites three men from her mother Donna’s past to her wedding in hopes of finding out who her biological father is. Auditions for this romantic comedy brought in actors on a much larger scale than other recent productions. Students across campus have been inspired to take the stage, including returning actors, newcomers, and nostalgic seniors.
For seniors, Mamma Mia! is an exciting opportunity to step out of their comfort zones during their last semester of high school. “It’s such a good play, such a good movie, music’s great. I thought that I might as well try something new for my last semester,” said Andre Freccia ‘26. Despite never having watched Mamma Mia!, Marcus To ‘26 said, “This is kind of my last chance to do [a musical]. And I hear it’s a great one, people are telling me it’s a really fun one, a really upbeat one… so I want to try it, of course.”
And it’s not just seniors. Mamma Mia! is attracting new actors from all grade levels. Allison Schwartz ‘28 said, “I’ve always liked both watching and being a part of theatre productions, and Mamma Mia is such an amazing show that I had to join.” Similarly, Jenny Castro ‘28 said, “I love everything from the plot to the music, and when I heard that it would be the spring musical, it was just the encouragement I needed to push myself to audition.” Kingsley Gillett ‘27 said, “I just love ABBA as a band… pretty simple as that.” ABBA, the pop group whose songs Mamma Mia! is built around, created the iconic musical arrangements, including songs like “Dancing Queen” and “The Winner Takes It All.”
This musical is also attracting actors who haven’t stepped on stage in a while to return to the spotlight. No matter what role she takes, Poema Ueligitone ‘26 simply wants to be “part of the process” again. “I kind of just wanted to have a similar experience to what I had in middle school,” she said, “just for the fun of it.” Similarly,
Whether you’re a die-hard Mamma Mia! fan or a newcomer to theatre, the excitement surrounding this production is undeniable. As the cast prepares to return to the timeless rhythm of 70s pop, this spring musical is sure to be the grand finale of the school year. Clear your calendars for opening night on May 1st, and get ready to dance, jive, and have the time of your life!
