The Current Events Club, led by Lincoln Gerstner ’27 and Kingston Desuasido ’27, was created with the hope of fostering intellectual curiosity and civic responsibility among students who represent the next generation of citizens. To fulfill this mission and provide real experience with the democratic processes, the club recently organized a Prop-50 Mock Election.
The main objectives of the Mock Election were as follows:
-
Practical Engagement: To provide students with a hands-on, practical understanding of researching and voting on a major state ballot measure.
-
Encourage Deliberation: To challenge students to critically analyze and debate complex political topics.
-
Political Benchmarking: To gauge the political alignment of the student body compared to the state electorate.
The club executed the election by preparing mock ballots and having club representatives deliver brief presentations on the proposition to social science classes. This effort transformed the learning experience from passive discussion into active decision-making. The high level of student participation not only revealed fascinating political trends within the school but also strongly suggests that SHP students are more politically curious and engaged than we might think.
