A collective of Sacred Heart students joined up with other student protestors from local high schools on January 30th in Redwood City to protest the actions of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This was part of a national call to action coming from Minnesota organizers. This article will display photos and other content taken during the protest.

While on her way to the protest, Emily said, “This is my first time going to a protest. I remember I didn’t go to No Kings or the other school walkout we had last year. I really regretted my decision of not going simply because I was scared of what might happen if I do go. I’m trying to be… more open about sharing my opinions on the kind of issues our country is facing, particularly with immigration because my mom’s an immigrant… just making sure that rights our protected and that people can safely enter our country.”

After the conclusion of the protest, attendee Alondra said, “In the past year, it’s been difficult to see my community be terrorized and alienated. To see so many students from Sacred Heart show up and advocate for immigrant rights gave me hope for change and it was amazing to see everybody’s support.”

Lucy said she attended the protest because “I care deeply about this issue and I want to set a good example for my peers and demonstrate my care and attention to the subject.”

Karen said she participated in the protest because, “It affects the community where I grew up, especially in Redwood City, where the place where I grew up, everyone knew each other. We all knew each other’s backgrounds. We’re called Little Michoacan for a reason. I just want to make sure that for all the people who can’t walk out, who still have to go to their jobs, whether that be landscaping or housekeeping or any sort of job that is at risk when it comes to ICE coming into our cities. I think we deserve a voice too.”
